Contradictions At Their Finest

From condescending, to contradicting, to sarcastic, this article covering the many perspectives of "conservative men" and their opinions on how to raise a daughter is good for creating a truly depressing giggle and slightly disgusted face.

Starting with a sarcastic tone, this article begins by harping about the tragedies of receiving a daughter instead of a son as if it was the 1600s and fathers, who are the main subject, have anything truly valuable to give to their ‘heirs’. Let’s talk about how outdated this idea is by seeing how it can be portrayed in modern terms. Slide nine refers to the importance of teaching daughters that “women are the property of their husbands” but do not fret, because we do live in a modernized world after all.

Women can also “be strong. Like a Ford F-150”. Irony who? This sentence is as ironic as what ended up happening when Kelly Osbourne tried to call out Donald Trump’s offensive remarks about Latinos by asking a perplexing, yet probably accurate, question; “If you kick out Latinos, who will clean your toilet, Donald Trump?”. To both attempts at seeming woke, liberal, or whatever you consider not being racist/sexist to be, I say try again. Maybe comparing your daughter to an inanimate object and mentioning it as if it was a right that was gifted to her by more progressive times shortly after declaring her property of someone else isn’t the gift you thought it was. But hey, at least some are self-aware of their actions.

There are many who, if asked by probably a man, would simply admit they “let the internalized misogyny do most of the work”. Ultimately, it must be hard to belittle, objectify, and degrade someone simply because of their gender unless there’s something else helping you out, especially when they are of the same gender as the person who birthed, bathed, and fed you. I wouldn’t be surprised if multiple of these men had mommy issues, to be honest. Of course, I am aware none of these are true statements but, it doesn’t make them any less likely to occur. I am 100% sure we have all heard something along these lines, maybe with a few tweaks, but all the same with a hidden meaning. Women are nothing if not an object to do a man’s bidding or a nuisance or a curse that must be dealt with and put in its place. How is that for parenting?

  1. I love the allusions to other outside works, such as the comparison to the article's mention of how women should be as strong as a Ford F-150 to Kelly Osbourne's speech on "The View." I also really loved how you applied the article to a more broad sense at the end--it really tied the entire blog together. Overall, really nice job!

  2. I like how you made your own piece sarcastic when describing what the article was satirizing. You also included some rhetorical questions and your own opinion which I thought really elevated your blog.

  3. I love your tone throughout the blog. Phrases like "Irony who?" really add lots of style to your piece, as if you're ridiculing these men along with the blog instead of only plainly analyzing it.

  4. I really liked how you used a real world example to show that even if the Onion was exemplifying these ideals, that does not mean they don’t occur in our own world just as prominently.
