"The next step in human evolution"

Science is great. Thanks to science humanity has overcome multiple plagues and pandemics, as well as created easier ways of life through technology. However, there are limits to how much the laws of nature can be bent in favor of humans. Scientific discovery can be a curse as much as it can be a blessing, and this is seen in multiple scenarios. From radium to nuclear power, to completely unrelated things like Spiderman villains.

The Lizard, a villain depicted in The Amazing Spiderman, is an instance of how genetic testing went too far. Soon after being crippled while performing an emergency battle surgery, Kurt Connors began to work towards an ideal goal, a world without weakness. He discovered that this could be done through cross-species genetics, more specifically the genetics of lizards. Lizards are known to have regenerative genes, and therefore Dr. Connors saw an opportunity. He began running tests to try and create a cure for his condition and if you haven't figured it out yet, Dr. Connors became known as The Lizard after a failed test turned him into a giant lizard. Sounds hilarious, but it was a lot more dramatic than I made it seem.

Nature has a code of conduct and breaking these rules is an invitation to consequences. There are lines you cannot cross and steps you cannot skip, and rushing discovery due to eagerness for fame or success is bound to end poorly. Still, it is foolish to say that avoiding discovery and repressing curiosity is the solution to all our problems. In the end, Dr. Connor’s intentions were not vile, and his results were not completely hopeless. Given more time and resources he could have found a prominent solution, but we must learn to understand that the first answer is not always the correct solution.
